Pet Spay & Neuter in Winterville, NC 28590

Spay and neuter surgery benefits cats and dogs and males and females alike. The surgery is one of the most commonly done on pets and is also the most beneficial. At Winterville Animal Care, we highly recommend this surgery for all puppies and kittens due to the life-improving benefits it offers.

How Does Spay and Neuter Surgery Benefit My Pet? in Winterville, NC

The surgery helps pets live longer, healthier, and happier lives in the following ways:

  • Spayed cats and dogs do not go into heat cycles, which is frustrating for all parties involved!
  • Neutered dogs and cats are less likely to exhibit undesirable behaviors, including urine spraying, mounting, and aggression toward other males.
  • Spayed and neutered pets are all less likely to try to escape to find a mate.
  • Neutered cats and dogs are at a reduced risk of developing prostate problems and have no chance of developing testicular cancer.
  • Spayed dogs and cats are less likely to develop mammary gland tumors and have no risk of developing uterine or ovarian cancers or diseases.

When Should My Pet Be Spayed or Neutered?

We usually recommend that puppies and kittens undergo spay/neuter surgery at about six months. However, if your female pet is at a healthy weight, we may recommend an earlier surgery at about five months of age. This is so we can perform the surgery before her first heat cycle, reducing her chances of developing a mammary gland tumor later in life.

Additionally, we may put off surgery for large breed dogs until they are about one year old to reach their full size. Reproductive hormones play an essential role in controlling the growth rate of larger breeds so that a later surgery can be more beneficial to them. Your veterinarian will discuss your pet’s options with you in detail so you can come up with a decision together!
